The concept for our ThermoSmart thermostat project is for us to create an inexpensive, ultra-low power sensor network that can detect temperature and occupancy of a room and relay that information via an RF transmitter, to a "smart" thermostat. This thermostat will contain a microcontroller, programmed with a smart algorithm that will evaluate the data and assign a weighted value to each sensor location and then determine if the HVAC system needs to be activated. The network of sensors will be powered by solar panels, the PIR sensor will be powered by a 9 volt battery and all will be integrated into a household item to better blend into the room in which they are installed.

The Inspiration for our ThermoSmart thermostat project was right in front of us everyday. Everyone's been in a home that inevitably has a room that is considered the "cold" or "hot" room. It happens because the air flow in air ducts can only be adjusted so much. Many thermostats are too old to have fine adjustments for temperature settings and the newer models still only have one central temperature sensor that is rarely centrally located in a good position for temperature sensing. Many thermostats can be difficult to program for the average consumer and newly available "self-programming" thermostats are too expensive.
